Who We Are

FSGC Frazier B building.Family Service & Guidance CenterWelcome!

Family Service & Guidance Center (FSGC) is a nonprofit community mental health center that specializes in meeting children’s unique needs. We provide direct clinical services, prevention education and outreach to nearly 12,000 children, adolescents and families from 38 Kansas counties annually. Today, FSGC is an innovator and recognized leader in children's mental health services, employing 270 staff members on a centralized three-building campus and a Crisis Resolution Program building.

FSGC has been improving the lives of children in Shawnee County and across northeast Kansas for over 100 years. In 1904, FSGC was established to help Topeka flood victims. As the needs in our community have changed, so has our focus.

In the 1950s, we began to focus on providing mental health care services, and in 1984, FSGC became committed to meeting the unique mental health needs of children and families exclusively.

Today, Family Service & Guidance Center offers a broad range of services, including outpatient individual, family and group therapy; child and adolescent psychiatry; an anxiety treatment program; a therapeutic preschool for children aged 2-6 with severe emotional and behavioral problems; Families Supporting Recovery for children and adolescents dealing with mental illness and substance use issues; community-based services, including case management; crisis services available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; screenings to determine the need for in-patient hospitalization; Transitions to Adulthood Program for young adults with mental illness; the Youth Development Program for school-age children and teens; and the popular Happy Bear abuse prevention program.

FSGC is a Trauma-Informed Organization. Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is a framework in which FSGC realizes the impact that trauma can have and recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in both clients and staff. That’s why we integrate what we know about trauma into all of our policies, procedures, practices and settings.
